The Tropics was located at the Hotel Phillips, 12th at Baltimore, in Kansas City, Missouri. The hotel opened in 1931, and boasted "20 Stories of Comfort", which was the tallest building in Kansas City at the time.
Simulated tropical rainstorms would occur every hour at the Tropics (much like the Tonga Room in San Francisco today), and a mechanical hula girl would appear from behind the bar and dance during the storms. This souvenir cocktail menu features drinks with a nod to several tropical islands: Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico... and... Manhattan ?
From the menu description: " The Tropics- A world of unbelievable variety- Age old tradition and ultra-modern culture- Intriguing contrasts and irresistible charm. Mystic rituals- Symbolic songs and dances- The witchery of the jungle. Flowers- Music- Laughter. For your pleasure we suggest a selection from these unusual Tropics cocktails."
