The Hawaii Kai, open from the 1950's to the late 1980's, was located at Broadway & 50th St. (in the Winter Garden Theather Building) . It featured the Okole Maluna Bar, the Lounge of Seven Pleasures ( where the Tahitian-Aires played nightly ), and the Halawai Room dining room. All three rooms were designed by Frederick Fox ( who created scenic designs for Broadway plays from the 1930's-1960's).
From the inside of this menu:
The Hawaii Kai bids you Aloha, Nui, Aloha... A big welcome ! Let us whisk you five thousand miles away to a Polynesian world of remance and splendor...
" As you cross our threshold, you become part of the romantic Polynesian world jealously guarded by Tiki Gods. Delight your senses with lyrical waterfalls and glorious lava rock gardens. Inspect our bamboo huts flown in from the distant islands. See our captive Manu birds display their colorful plumage as they "serenade" you with a cacophony of song.
Dine in our Halawai Room where the very finest of Island foods are served luau style, amid a South Sea setting of authentic native outrigger canoes & fishing floats, porcupine fish, tapa, and gundu drums- all magnificently displayed in a splendor of tropical lighting. Drop in at our Okole Maluna Bar where native conjurers mix exotic South Sea brews, served in fantastic Kiaha stemware..."
This photos in the menu suggest the 1960's, yet the prices of many of the drinks and meals reflect slightly later years.
